The Foundation of all successful relationships is not Love! Despite how much we romanticize the idea of love, the real definitive aspect of a relationship is respect. This is why two people who seem so opposite can have a successful relationship. It is not common interests or unbridled physical attraction that makes the relationship last. It is a simple respect for each other's boundaries, beliefs and interests. If there were one jewel of wisdom I could pass on to you about having successful love relationships that would be it. Remember to respect your partner, friends, family and coworkers and you'll find that love will be in the midst. By the same token, refuse anything but respect. This is often the problem in a codependent relationship. A person suffering codependency needs to be in a relationship to feel whole at any price. This is an error of judgement. To have a relationship founded on anything other than respect is almost a guarantee for failure or at the very least an extremely dysfunctional relationship. Once you share respect with another person, love will flourish between you. Understand, it may not be romantic, passionate love, but love will certainly flow. If you imagine Love like a person, there are many systems within it that keep it working. We are not our hearts, but we would not be without one. The same is true with Love, respect is the heart of love. The other aspects of love are optional and will vary with the type of relationship. I know this sounds horribly unromantic, but romance is something that can be added to this foundation to make the type of relationship you dream about.
